Which Weird Latin Phrase Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla
it's weird that that's my result for that quiz, because another allie on the opposite coast got the same result. i stumbled across her page while reading her comment on a post on this page. I stumbled across that page the other night. I love his writing style. It makes me feel bad about my own. I'm lazy. He's British, so maybe it just comes more naturally to him. I don't think so though. He promises that by reading you'll, at the very least, "learn the beauty of a well-constructed sentence." And really, they are very well-constructed sentences. And it's worth a read.
Sigh. Didn't I say that I was getting back to work earlier? I should do that...

I came into work this morning and the first email that I read was from Beck. She asked if I remembered what the difference was between a reel and a jig. When we were in Dublin in August we'd gone on a musical pub crawl and we were instructed that you could tell between a reel and a jig because one had a rhythm of "rashers and sausages" and the other was "black and decker". I couldn't remember which one was which either (we'd both imbibed on quite a few pints during that pub crawl...), but I was determined to find the answer to her question.
First, I Googled for the answer, but didn't come up with anything. So then I turned around and asked the guy in the cube across the way, Matt, if he had any trad CDs with him (he's also a fan of Celtic music). I was in luck, because he did have a trad CD at his desk that had both a jig and a reel on it. I popped it in and quickly got my answer. I'm recording it here, so that next time I "need" to know (because you know I'll forget again) I can just look up in my blog archives around St Patrick's Day '04 and see that:
Jigs are Rashers and Sausages. Reels are Black and Decker.
It was a low key St Patrick's Day, which was fine, because I did plenty of partying this past weekend. ;) My Green Potato Soup was a hit here at work. After work I went up to the parents' house and had corned beef and cabbage and then Dodi and I went to Friday's, where Scott met up with us, for a couple of pints of Guinness. We were joined by Scott's friend, Frank, and Dodi's cousin, Chris, and we had a good time chatting and imbibing. We didn't see HOTD because we thought that since we wouldn't get there until after 7 we'd miss most of the show and it wouldn't be worth the $10 cover. Meredith and her husband went, and it turns out that they played until, like, 10, but it doesn't matter, I think I'm going to see them Friday anyways.
Ugh. Back to work.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
A few little dancing Irish guys in honor of St. Patrick's Day...
So we're having a little "party" in the office today because it's St Patrick's Day and because it's Michael's last day. I brought in "Irish" Green Potato Soup. I put Irish in quotes because I'm not exactly sure it's really an Irish recipe, but that's the name of it. It's potato and leek soup with broccoli and then pureed. I don't think next time I make it I'll totally puree it. I think I'll just smooth it out a bit or whatever and leave some chunks because it looks kind of watery to me and I like thicker soup. Or maybe put in less water or something. Anyway, I hope it's good!
I'm heading up to my parents' house after work today to have corned beef and cabbage with the family. I love corned beef and cabbage. It's my favorite meal, like, ever. After that I was planning on going to see HOTD at Revolution Hall, but I think that since I'd be kind of late (show starts at 6 and I probably won't get to my parents' house until like 5:45) I think I'll skip it. I want to go see HOTD at McGeary's this Friday, anyways... and it's cheaper there... So there ya go. Dodi and I might go out for a pint tonight either at Friday's or The Old Dublin Inn and that'll be the extent of my St Patrick's Day celebrations (I did enough "real" celebrating this past weekend, I think).
So anyways, Happy St Patrick's Day!

So the weekend was absolutely fabulous.
Saturday I got up early and went to the gym. Alex and Beck met me at my place around noon and we had some Guinness and Jameson before we hit the road to watch the parade. The walk to the parade route wasn't long at all, but it was damn cold. We stopped off at WT's on the way for a pint to warm up. The parade was boring as ever, but that's really not why people go out on that Saturday. We met up with some people at the parade and we all piled into Jesse's car and went to McGeary's afterwards. McGeary's was packed, so we went to the Big House for dinner and then everyone pretty much went home and crashed for a bit. Alex and I met up with Steve and Foster and Amy at Revolution Hall in troy for the 7N show. The show was awesome! I really had a great time. I'd seen 7N once before and I didn't remember how awesome they were live. The guys in the band were all pretty hot, so it was a visual treat as well ;)
Sunday Alex and I got breakfast (well, brunch, really) at Quintessence and then we hung out for a bit before heading up to Clifton Park to see The McKrells and The Glengarry Bhoys at Northern Lights. That show was awesome as well. The Mckrells went on before Glengarry, and they were pretty good, but they're not really my thing. I mean, I like them enough, but they're kind of like good background music for me. Then Glengarry went on and they put on a great show as always. I had a blast! For the encore Glengarry came out with the McKrells and they did a couple of songs together and it totally rocked. I totally didn't want the night to end. But it did. Sigh.
And now I'm still exhausted from the weekend. But what an awesome time! We took a lot of pictures (Alex is too funny when he's got his drunk on and he's got the camera... there are a lot of really random pictures...). You can view the pics from this weekend here.
So I was about to go to bed just now, and the Howard Stern TV show came on E (I'd been watching some E True Hollywood Story or something like that) and Jimmy Fallon is the guest and like the first thing Howard asks him is what his background was and Jimmy said that he's 27 and that he'd actually gone to college after high school and that he'd gone to the college of st rose here in albany. And then they said it was an idiot school. I'd have to agree. (I did attend for a semester for graduate school and it wasn't exactly challanging. at all.) He'd been going for CompSci and he said that there was a "real school" right across the street and he was referring to sunya and i think it's weird that he'd go to St Rose and pay all that extra money to attend, essentially, an idiot school for compsci when he admitted that suny is a "real school" and it's a state school and it's pretty much right across the street from state rose. ah well. i guess that doesn't matter, especially since he's famous and it's got nothing to do with what he went to school for.
anyway. goodnight.
